NAVY ABANDONS SEARCH FOR SAILOR FROM OHIO LISTED AS BUFFALONIAN

The Navy announced Monday that it had abandoned the search for Anthony J. Fleming, a sailor aboard the USS Saratoga whom the Navy had listed as being from Buffalo.

Navy officials concluded he was among the 21 servicemen killed when a ferry capsized near Haifa, Israel.

Fleming, 25, an aviation ordnanceman third class, was a native of Ashtabula, Ohio, and a 1984 graduate of Ashtabula High School, according to the Ashtabula Star-Beacon. A gifted athlete, he still holds the school's record at 100 meters.

The newspaper reported that Fleming has an unidentified uncle who lives in Buffalo and that Fleming enlisted in the Navy here in November 1986.

A family member in Ashtabula said the Flemings would be making no comment.
