On Dec. 16 against the St. Louis Blues I paid for the privilege of watching Team Talent. There was a turkey shoot after the game. During the game, the Sabres went through a turkey skate.
Except for occasional spurts, this team -- excluding Mike Ramsey and Clint Malarchuk -- played like it was running for the bus. The unfortunate part is that the season is only a third over.
Rick Dudley came here with a reputation of getting players to overachieve. Rick accomplished that last year. This year, the Sabres are back performing in their normal mode. Hefty contracts were signed, no need to worry. The golf courses will be filled with Sabres by April.
Former coach Ted Sator was right when he referred to this team as spoiled children. Rick Dudley is right when he states that some of these players think they are Sabres for life. He is right when he says this team plays dumb -- only he should add the word "lazy."
By now, it is obvious why Dale Hawerchuk had his ice time cut in Winnipeg last year. For one, he is not scoring goals. The knock on Phil Housley was he was suspect in his defensive play. Phil played at about a plus-1 last year. If Hawerchuk continues at his present rate he should finish around minus-25.
This team has gone through enough coaches. It's time the coach and the fans get a new team. A team that realizes hockey is a contact sport.
Rick Dudley was one of the hardest workers ever to play in a Sabre uniform. He deserves more than what he is getting.
