"We're looking for a few good homes," might be the motto of Construction Management of Western New York, Inc., a custom-home builder.

"We're different. We deal with special homes which frequently have unusual circumstances," explained Jon Dale, who with his partner Robert Clapp direct the East Aurora based-company.

Rounding out the firm is Andrew Rich, director of operations. "We have no interest in production homes; our homes are truly custom, individualized homes," he said.

Construction Management builds only three or four homes per year plus some remodeling and light commercial work; but each project is one-of-a-kind.

"We work out every detail of the home," continued Clapp, who had retired from the construction business only to return again at Construction Management.

"We begin with the design and assist the buyer in creating the right atmosphere for the home. High-end home buyers demand upscale features, specialty windows, custom cabinets and appliances," he said.

Managing the development of the home through its various stages of construction is critical, added Rich, who adds office and organization expertise to the trio. "Construction materials have to be top-of-the-line," he said. "For exterior, treatments we prefer brick, cedar, stone or stucco."

A 9,500 square foot Victorian -- presently under construction in Wales -- demonstrates the craftsmanship of the firm.

"This home will take approximately 15 months to complete," said Clapp as his crew enclosed it for interior work over the winter months. "This house was turned down by another builder because it was too complicated; we invite the challenge."

"In fact, when it comes to satisfaction with the completed home, our pleasure matches that of the new owners," Dale added proudly.

Two of the homes picture here -- one now occupied, the second nearly completed -- illustrate the unique choices of designs and finishing products suggested by the builder. Volume ceilings, open lofts, a two-story stone wall, specialty windows only touch the surface of the complimentary mix of design, function and aesthetics.

"We work out every detail with our buyers -- that's a true custom-built home," said Rich. "We also can build on the buyer's own lot." Construction Management works on homes with at least 2,500 square feet of living space and are priced from $200,000.

"Because our homes are special, we do not show them at open houses but prefer to discuss individual housing needs on a one-to-one basis," he concluded.
