WHAT'S HAPPENING

BASEBALL: Hamburg Post will be honored as 8th District champion at the annual awards dinner of the The Buffalo News-sponsored Erie County American Legion baseball program at 7 p.m. Jan. 3 at the Hamburg Post on Evans Street in Hamburg.

Regular-season championship trophies will be presented to the Portage Post and Tonawanda Post teams.

Hamburg Post's Larry Barreca will be presented the Bob Stedler Memorial Sportsmanship Award, named in honor of the late News sports editor who was instrumental in organizing the area's first Legion program.

The first Tops Markets All-Star Game most valuable player award will go to Mark Notaro of Jurek Post.

Dinner tickets at $10 are available at the Hamburg Post (649-4667) each day after 3 p.m. For more information, call Jerry Simoneit after 5 p.m. at 649-8629.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: The fifth annual Matt Colpoys Memorial Scholarship Tournament will be held Wednesday and Thursday at the Kenmore Middle School on Delaware Road, between Nassau and Crosby avenues in Kenmore. First game begins at 6 p.m. each night with the second immediately after. Participating schools are Kenmore West, Kenmore East, O'Hara and Mt. St. Mary's.

HOCKEY: Registration is under way at Holiday Twin Rinks and Leisure Rinks for the Senior A, B and C leagues and the Bald Eagles Oldtimers (over-35) league. Teams will be scheduled according to their preferred playing times. Call John McFall at 685-3660 by Jan. 1.

STREET HOCKEY: The West Side Play Area Street Hockey League needs teams in the 11- and 12-year-old division. Call league director Tovie Asarese at 885-7692 before 6 p.m. daily.

VOLLEYBALL: The first Snowball Tournament, to benefit the National Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundation, will be held Jan. 19-20 at Como Lake Park in Lancaster. Men's and coed divisions will play single-elimination first round, double-elimination thereafter. Registration is $100. Call 836-6460.
