Club America Vacations, an Atlanta-based tour company, announced that it will offer weekly charter flights between Niagara Falls International Airport and Cancun, Mexico, beginning Jan. 7.
"We determined that the Western New York-Toronto market is under-served with flights to Mexico and the Caribbean," said Kent Simmons, Club America's director of sales.
Simmons said the airport's location was a significant factor in Club America's decision to begin offering charter flights from Niagara Falls.
The airport can be reached from Ontario through the three major crossings in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area and also offers free parking for travelers, said Simmons, who also praised the efforts to market the facility.
The airport is not served by any major commercial airlines and local officials have been trying to develop the facility as a center for charters and cargo operations.
Because many of the passengers on the charter flights will be coming from outside the Niagara Falls area, Simmons said he expects many of them to stay overnight before and after their trip. As a result, he said, those visitors could take time to see the Falls and other local attractions.
Club America said it has booked 200,000 passengers to Mexico on its tour packages this year.
