Empire Cheese has announced it plans to idle its Skaneateles Cheese Plant for an indefinite time.
The plant employs 80 persons. It produces mozzarella and provolone cheese for the food service industry.
Officials at Cuba, N.Y.-based, Empire Cheese said the plant is being closed primarily because of higher milk premiums, a surplus of frozen mozzarella cheese and a weakness in the marketplace. They said the closing will take place within 60 days.
Empire laid off 120 of its workers in Cuba in September. They have not been recalled.
The company distributes cheese in the Northeast under the names of Empire and Cuba Cheese and that of private brands.
