DINKINS' POPULARITY SLUMPS IN POLL

The popularity of New York City's first black mayor has slipped dramatically since he took office in January, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

A slumping local economy and soaring murder rate have eroded confidence in Mayor David Dinkins' ability, according to a poll conducted by the Gallup Organization.

Only 33 percent of the city's adults surveyed approved of the way Dinkins is handling his job, a continuation of a downward slide.
