VOTERS ON GRAND ISLAND OK INCENTIVES FOR FIREFIGHTERS

Grand Island residents Tuesday voted, 216-96, to pay volunteer firefighters yearly incentive awards of $480 after they have reached age 62.

The Town Board on Oct. 1 agreed to the program for firefighters who have served the community since 1986. Those eligible will receive the money either in a lump sum or in annual installments spread over a maximum of five years.

Peter A. McMahon, chairman of the Grand Island Fire Company's Board of Directors, said, the program "will not only encourage older firemen to remain active but help us obtain new members to overcome the shortage that now exists."
