$485,469 IN FORFEITED FUNDS TURNED OVER TO AREA POLICE

A top official of the U.S. Justice Department was in Buffalo today to present to local police agencies $485,469 that was seized and forfeited in recent drug cases.

George J. Terwilliger III, a deputy attorney general who oversees the drug asset forfeiture program, presented the checks to the Buffalo Police Department, the New York State Police, the Niagara County Drug Task Force and 11 other area agencies during a luncheon at the Marine Midland Building. The largest of the checks, for $224,965, went to Buffalo Police Commissioner Ralph V. Degenhart.

Nearly $3 million worth of property, including $1.6 million in cash, has been forfeited this year to area police agencies through the program targeting the assets of area drug dealers, said U.S. Attorney Dennis C. Vacco.
