A 14-year-old girl and a girlfriend were sexually assaulted Monday night by a group of seven youths in a backyard near Kehr Street and Glenwood Avenue, police said today.

One of the youths, a 16-year-old, was arrested and charged with first-degree rape moments after officers arrived at the scene and chased him, police said.

They said the 16-year-old, who lives on Woodlawn Avenue, was charged with first-degree rape in the 8:40 p.m. assault on the 14-year-old girl. He also was charged with resisting arrest.

The girl told police several neighborhood youths surrounded her and a girlfriend and took them to the isolated yard, where they were beaten and sexually assaulted.

Police said the 16-year-old was the only suspect caught. Officers chased the suspect from Winslow Avenue to Glenwood, where he was forcibly subdued and arrested, police said.

The girl told police she knew some of the suspects, having seen them in the neighborhood.

She identified the 16-year-old as one of her attackers after police captured him, officers said.
