A majority of parents kept their children home Monday and some held a boisterous demonstration outside P.S. 161 to protest the ouster of Dr. Galen Guberman, a popular interim principal fired by Bronx Community School Board 7.
"We want Dr. G back and we're not letting in another principal," said Luz Molina, a PTA official who organized the protest. About 100 parents, joined by students holding signs, arrived at Tinton Avenue elementary school beginning at 6 a.m. to find a large link chain on the front doors.
Police used a blowtorch to cut the lock and the school was open as usual, although most parents opted to keep their children home. Guberman, who said only 85 of the school's 620 students showed up for classes, said he was elated about the support he's getting from parents, but also saddened by the board's actions.
