Junior guard Stacie Kane scored a career-high 25 points Sunday as Niagara held off visiting Canisius, 79-75, in a women's basketball game.
The game was the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Niagara is 4-2 overall, Canisius 6-3.
Niagara had a 42-41 halftime lead and the outcome was in doubt until Kim Kuhn hit both ends of a one-and-one with four seconds to play. Samantha David added 19 points and Pam Gleason 16 for the Lady Eagles.
Canisius got a career-high 24 points and 13 rebounds from sophomore Anne Brocker, 20 points from Jennifer McHugh and 14 points from Kristin Scheuermann.
Lakeland (Ohio) Community College handed host Eric CC an 81-40 defeat. Cat Houston led ECC (1-11) with 15 points and Julie Bowers added 12.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Erie CC shot 64 percent from the field to beat Allegheny (Pa.), 95-83, for its fourth straight win. Sean L. Williams led the Kats (7-7) with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Daniel McKinney added 22 points and Shawn Cunningham 15.
Niagara sophomore Brian Clifford was named MAAC rookie of the week for his play in the Purple Eagles' 73-71 win Tuesday night at St. Bonaventure. The 6-foot-8 forward had 16 points, 11 rebounds and four assists as Niagara completed its first season sweep of the Bonnies in 28 years.
Clifford is Niagara's co-leader in scoring (12.3 points per game) and leads the team in rebounding (8.1 per game).
