PRISON-BOUND VISITORS HURT WHEN BUS SLIDES OFF ICY ROAD

A chartered bus carrying visitors to a state prison slid off icy Route 17 in this Chemung County town and down a steep embankment early Saturday, injuring 28 people, said Trooper William Stavinski.

The bus was chartered from the Cambridge Bus Co. of New York to carry 49 relatives to visit inmates at a state prison at Elmira, said Frank Oliver, spokesman at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., where 22 victims were treated and three were in critical condition, including a 57-year-old woman who suffered a heart attack after the accident.

Three passengers were being treated at Arnot-Ogden Memorial Hospital in Elmira, where spokesman Bob Buck said their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Three passengers were treated at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, a spokesman said.
