Maria A. Fontana, a hairdresser who operated La Fontaine Hair Fashions in the Town of Tonawanda, died Thursday in Millard Fillmore Hospital. She was 74.
She and her husband, Charles Fontana, also a hair stylist, operated shops next door to each other on Englewood Avenue in the 1950 and 1960s. Her clientele was women; his was men.
After they married in 1935, they moved to New York where they worked for several years in salons in the London Towers, a fashionable residential hotel.
They later returned to Kenmore and opened her own business. She later worked at the European Continental Hair Salon in Kenmore. She retired eight years ago, but retained a few private clients.
A Buffalo native, she was interested in music and had studied classical piano extensively. She was a member of the Nardin Academy Parents Board in the 1960s.
Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Mary Ann Killian of the Town of Tonawanda, and Monique Pate ; a sister, Lena Ruggiero of the Town of Tonawanda; and two grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:45 a.m. Monday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1085 Englewood Ave., Town of Tonawanda. Prayers will be at 9 a.m. in the Amigone Funeral Home, 2600 Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
