Traditional used 29 points from Mike Gayles and a second-half burst to bury Lackawanna, 77-61, Thursday night in the Al Pastor Memorial boys basketball tournament at Buffalo State College's Houston Gym.
Traditional (2-0) will play Grover Cleveland in a final at 3 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Auditorium, while Lackawanna will play Turner/Carroll at Buffalo State tonight at 9:15 in a consolation.
Lackawanna, paced by Sean Daley with 20 points and Mike Mamula with 18, led by 16-14 after one quarter, but Traditional grabbed a 33-29 halftime lead.
The Bulls, who also got 18 points and 11 rebounds from Colin Rhodes, then took command, taking a 54-42 lead into the final quarter.
Earlier, Timon (4-0) turned back Buffalo Arts, 58-47, behind 25 points from Jeff Muszynski and 17 from Steve Kull. The Tigers pulled away from a 22-22 halftime tie to lead 38-33 after three quarters. Michael Heuitt led Arts with 14 points and James Boone netted 13.
Timon will play St. Francis in a final at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Aud, while Arts plays Burgard tonight at 7:30 at Buffalo State in a consolation.
Undefeated Springville forced 27 turnovers to tip visiting McKinley, 51-48. Dave Peterson tallied 13 points to pace a balanced scoring attack for the Griffins (5-0), while Jerel Williams scored 11 points to lead McKinley. . . . Jerry Heider scored 16 points, Brian Lesser added 11 and Mike Barreca netted 10 as St. Mary's School for the Deaf took a 20-6 first-quarter lead and roared past Vermont Deaf, 62-44.
Darrick Castronova tallied 26 points and Joel Orton added 12 points and 12 rebounds as Christian Central pounded Calasanctius, 76-49. Zeke Lyons scored 16 points to pace Calasanctius. . . . Matt Hunter's 27 points lifted West Seneca Christian over Park, 61-50. Cesar Gimenez scored 30 of Park's 50 points.
