Elderly persons in Hamburg and other parts of Western New York are the targets of an apparent telephone scam, according to Detective Sgt. Joseph LaRosa and Capt. Thomas Best of the Town of Hamburg Police Department.
LaRosa said Thursday night he had investigated two reports of elderly people being solicited by phone to send money to a San Diego address to qualify for "big prizes."
He said one of the persons was told, "You've just been selected a winner" to participate in a contest in which the prizes included $25,000, a brand-new car and $5,000 worth of camera equipment.
But to be eligible, the person called was asked to send a $599 bank cashier's check,
