The State Legislature made midyear spending cuts to close a $1 billion budget gap. They include:
Jobs. Elimination of 6,000 state jobs, with layoffs for nearly 2,000 state workers.
Local aid. A loss in revenue sharing of more than $7 million for Erie County and nearly $3 million for Buffalo.
School aid. School districts will receive $190 million less than what was budgeted. Buffalo loses $1.84 million; Niagara Falls $429,313.
Medicaid. A $102 million savings in $3.97 billion Medicaid budget. Cuts in medical services for the poor are excluded.
SUNY tuition. Increase of $150 per student in January and September. Tuition Assistance awards reduced by $100. Tuition awards for part-time students increased.
Salaries. Deferral of one week's pay for all state workers until the next fiscal year. Then workers will receive an extra day of pay each pay period until the debt is repaid.
