NASSAU INMATE FREE ON BAIL TO GET ABORTION

Christina Broers, 26, an inmate at the Nassau County jail who claimed she was wrongly denied an abortion by jail officials, Wednesday was released on $25,000 bail, saying she would try to get an abortion elsewhere.

Ms. Broers, who had been in the jail's psychiatric ward since her arrest Aug. 8 for assault and stealing her mother's car, said she repeatedly had asked for an abortion at the Nassau County Medical Center since Sept. 16 when she found she was pregnant. When officials scheduled an abortion Oct. 17, tests at the center determined she was 21.8 weeks pregnant, which it said was beyond the hospital's time limit for an abortion.

In New York State, the limit for a standard abortion procedure is 24 weeks of pregnancy.
