An Erie County Court jury today convicted a Buffalo man of raping a 9-year-old girl in 1988 after promising to give her a doll's stroller if she would have sex with him.
Following several hours of deliberations at the close of a week-long trial before Senior Judge Rose D. LaMendola, the jury found Delano Anderson, 45, of 62 Leroy Ave., guilty of first-degree rape.
Prosecutor Diane M. LaVallee said Anderson, who is unemployed, was arrested more than a year after the rape occurred in a Victoria Street home because the victim was reluctant to tell her mother what happened in April 1988.
Anderson, a friend of the girl's mother, had given the girl a doll's stroller to have sex with him, Miss LaVallee said. The girl couldn't recall the actual date of the rape, the prosecutor said.
Anderson, who denied the girl's claims, was remanded to jail in lieu of $10,000 bail pending sentencing Jan. 28. He faces a prison term of up to 25 years.
