The National Safe Kids Campaign is reminding parents that helmets make excellent gifts to children getting new bikes for the holidays or kids who already have bikes.

According to Safe Kids, helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent and the risk of brain injury by 90 percent because they absorb and diffuse the impact of a crash or fall before it reaches the brain.

Safe Kids recommends looking for a helmet that meets the safety criteria developed by the American National Standards Institute or the Snell Memorial Foundation. Both test the ability of a helmet to absorb the impact of a collision and check the strength of the strap and buckle as well.
