INTRUDER BEATS WOMAN, 79, ATTEMPTS TO TORCH HOUSE

A 79-year-old woman was beaten by a man who broke into her Rawlins Avenue house Sunday morning and tried setting it on fire, the woman told police.

The intruder broke into the woman's house about 2:30 a.m. and told her he would burn down her home unless she gave him money and complied with other demands.

The woman told police the man lighted a newspaper and started a small fire, which she stamped out. He then struck her with a brick and tried to sexually assault her, she said. The assailant ran off with $25. Information on the woman's condition was unavailable this morning.
