A fire that destroyed a Niagara Falls apartment building and killed two male tenants was apparently started by one of the victims, fire officials said today.
The fire caused about $100,000 damage to a three-story apartment building at 716 Willow Ave. Saturday night. Robert Miller, Niagara Falls deputy fire chief, said this morning that the victims' names will not be released until they are positively identified.
However, Shirley Noworyta said one of the victims was her son, William Noworyta, 33, who moved into the apartment house earlier Saturday.
"We believe the fire was set by one of the victims," Miller said. "We have reason to believe the person has a fire-setting history."
Fire officials Saturday night said it appeared someone had thrown a Molotov cocktail into the building. Miller said today that theory has been discarded.
