An extensive search Sunday morning of the Varysburg area failed to turn up any evidence of a downed plane, which was reported Saturday by several residents.
The Wyoming County Sheriff's Department received several reports of an object in the sky that resembled a small aircraft in flames shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday.
About 150 volunteer firefighters from Varysburg and Attica, on foot and in all-terrain vehicles, searched about 10 miles of woods west of Varysburg.
Sheriff Allen Capwell had discontinued the search at 9 p.m. Saturday.
Two helicopters, one from Erie County and the second from the State Police, conducted an hourlong intensive search of the Varysburg area beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday. The aerial searches failed to turn up any sign of a plane crash.
Capwell said the Federal Aviation Administration had no reports of either missing or overdue private planes.
A Wyoming County sheriff's dispatcher Sunday evening said the search was discontinued indefinitely.
