COMMENT PERIOD EXTENDED ON S-AREA CLEANUP PLAN

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has extended the public comment period on plans for remediation of the Occidental Chemical Corp.'s S-Area Landfill and construction of a new $64.5 million municipal water treatment plant through Dec. 14.

"The extension was felt necessary to give the public ample time to make comment and examine the document, entitled 'Stipulation of Requisite Remedial Technology Program,' " Michael Basile, an EPA spokesman said.

The document has been filed with U.S. District Court in Buffalo and was presented locally at a public meeting Oct. 18 in Niagara Falls, he said.
