Barker School District voters Wednesday approved, 178-109, a $1.6 million bond issue for school building renovations, school district
officials said.

Renovations in the bond issue include:

$465,000 for improvements at Pratt Elementary School.

$330,000 for health and safety measures, including asbestos removal in several buildings and renovating stairways and the high school swimming pool and work on the ventilation system and

$265,000 for the redesign of the high school boys' locker room, construction of a new hockey field, offices and classroom space.

$77,000 for improvements to heating-system controls.

$169,000 for an exterior storage building for flammable and hazardous materials and fueling system for district vehicles. Both are required under new state environmental regulations.

$188,430 for project administrative costs.

The projects must be approved by the state Education Department. If they are, work could begin in June with completion in September.

Superintendent Robert Melone said the project requires $1.2 million in short-term bonding and $400,000 already earmarked for the work.
