Buffalo Common Council Member Archie Amos is taking a brutal stance with Buffalo's city employees who were recently called to active duty in the Persian Gulf crisis.
I was appalled to hear his pontificating that "when you accept the job as a reservist, you accept all the extenuating circumstances, pay being included."
Currently, several Buffalo police officers and firefighters are serving in the gulf with the U.S. Coast Guard Port Security Detachment. They serve at a reduced rate of pay, with their families left behind to deal with mounting bills.
The decent thing to do is to at least allow these reservists to receive city subsidies to maintain their income at the level before the call-up. They should not be punished for serving their country.
This is a time we should be supporting these people.
