The Buffalo Sabres are in the midst of one of the worst season starts in years. Their inconsistency is evident from game to game and period to period. However, I feel that this syndrome is not that of the players only, but of the coaching staff.
Rick Dudley is still playing musical chairs as far as line combinations go (this goes back to last year's playoff disaster), and concentrating too much on defensive hockey. The amount of ice time that the Sabres supposed stars get cannot compare with that of those around the league. Players like Steve Yzerman, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux (when healthy), Brett Hull, John Cullen, Ray Bourque and Al MacInnes sometimes log 40 minutes a game.
Players like Pierre Turgeon, Dave Andreychuk, Rick Vaive, Alexander Mogilny, and Dale Hawerchuk can't score too many points when they are sitting on the bench.
