FIRE PITS FOUND AT HOSPITAL SITE

Archaeologists are swarming over a hospital renovation site after a land survey unearthed two 5,000-year-old fire pits, officials said Friday.

Officials excavated the fire pits, stone pieces and arrowhead fragments dating to 3000 B.C., on land that belongs to Bassett Hospital, said Albert LaFrance, who heads the survey. The discovery of a 2-inch layer of ash indicates heavy human activity there, he said.

"Right now we're looking at 3000 B.C., and that's just an educated guess," LaFrance said.
