A Queens congressman and minister preached a sermon of hope Friday as he exhorted a Niagara Falls audience to rise above personal adversity and to seize power over their own lives.

"We can achieve; we can overcome; we can rise from the pit of the ghetto to the power of our lives," the Rev. Floyd H. Flake told nearly 200 people at an awards dinner sponsored by St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church at the Ramada Inn.

Among those honored at the dinner was Rose H. Sconiers, an associate judge of Buffalo City Court, who was given a special recognition award.
