Ames Department Stores Inc. will close one of its two stores on Main Street in Batavia. The store, which has about 80 mostly part-time workers, will be closing as soon as merchandise is liquidated.
"We had a couple of stores that were in fairly close proximity," said William J. Roberts, spokesman for the Rocky Hill, Conn.-based discount department store chain. "We thought it would be best to go with the store that was performing more strongly."
The Ames at 1530 E. Main St. will close while the store at 4152 W. Main St., about four miles away, will remain open.
East Main Street store employees will receive severance and vacation pay based on their duties and the amount of time they have worked for the company, Roberts said.
