A federal appeals court Friday overturned the extortion convictions of former U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia and his wife.
The Garcias were convicted last October of extorting payoffs from the scandal-plagued Wedtech Corp.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the verdict, ruling that the couple never threatened Wedtech or its officers with economic harm.
"Garcia never even hinted that he was prepared to use his power to harm Wedtech," the appeals court said.
