RECORDS/BRIEFLY-COUNTRY

Lionel Cartwright, I Watched It on the Radio (MCA 42336). Simply put, this is the most listenable new country album we've heard this year. Take a Ricky Skaggs, smooth out his voice a bit, move him a little closer to the middle of the road and you have Cartwright. The best example here is "My Heart Is Set on You," a blatantly commercial but bouncy little song. -- Dan Herbeck

Conway Twitty, Greatest Hits Volume III (MCA 6391). "Saturday Night Special" is one of the great "story songs" from the past decade. It's the tale of a chance meeting and love affair between a would-be bandit and a lady who has gone into a pawn shop to sell her engagement ring. An unforgettable song dramatically delivered by boom-voiced Twitty, it slipped in and out of the Top 40 much too fast last year. The rest of this material here is standard Twitty fare culled from his past five or six albums. -- D.H.
