BATAVIA COUNCIL NAMES ACTING ADMINISTRATOR

The City Council at a special meeting Thursday night unanimously appointed William Reemtsen acting administrator to succeed Vilas S. Gamble who steps down today.

Reemtsen, 39, has been assistant administrator since November 1982. Originally from Grove City, Pa., he worked for the Northern Kentucky Area Development District and was an assistant to the city manager in South Miami, Fla., before coming to Batavia.

Gamble resigned because of "philosophical differences" with the Council in the past two years over how the city administrator's office should be run. He will serve as a consultant at his full $51,000 annual salary for the next six months.

Reemtsen will be paid $48,000 per year and will serve "at the pleasure of the City Council pending the appointment of a new city
administrator."

He said he has not yet decided whether he will be a candidate when the Council names a search committee to recruit a new administrator.
