A motorist led Niagara County sheriff's deputies on a chase for more than 25 miles early today at speeds reaching 100 mph.

The driver abandoned his car 20 minutes later, along with his passengers -- a woman and three children -- on Lake Road in Orleans County, deputies said.

Deputy Gregory Saraf said he attempted to pull the vehicle over in Ewings Road, Newfane, for suspicion of drunken driving. The driver sped off, and the chase extended to Lake Road, where the driver stopped and fled on foot into a field. Bloodhounds were used unsuccessfully in a search.

The woman and children, 6 months, 3 and 5 years, were held overnight at the sheriff's office. The woman identified herself as a common-law wife of the Rochester resident.

Sheriff's deputies said they will secure a warrant for the suspect.
