With a flourish from Henry Fillmore's "Americans We" march, the Akron Community Band Wednesday began its 67th concert season at the Alden Memorial Park Wednesday evening.
The band will start its Akron season Friday by performing the "Grandioso March" and the blaring "Seventy-Six Trombones" march from "Music Man," the Broadway favorite.
Band Director James F. Gerber will lead the 60-piece band in a dozen concerts this summer. The performances usually attract several hundred listeners in Alden and more than 500 at Akron's Russell Park. The summer series is sponsored by the Village of Akron and the towns of Alden and Newstead.
Some seating is available, but concert-goers might wish to bring their own chairs or blankets, said Marilyn J. Kasperek, band president. Mrs. Kasperek, a flutist, and her husband, Ken, a trumpeter, represent just one of the several multimember family performers.
Friday's concert at Akron will be the first performed from the almost completed gazebo in Russell Park. All concerts begin at 8 p.m. The remaining schedule:
Alden: July 11 and 25 and Aug. 8. Akron: July 6, 13, 20 and 27 and Aug. 3, 10 and 17.
