$157,050 FINES IMPOSED ON O-CELLO-O PLANT BY EPA

Fines totaling $157,050 will be sought from General Mill's O-Cello-O Division for failing to notify federal and state authorities about the accidental release of three hazardous substances last year from its Sawyer Avenue plant in the Town of Tonawanda.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said despite serious potential health damaging releases that could cause respiratory problems and damage to the central nervous system, company officials waited seven hours after the discharge started to notify state officials and 36 hours before they notified federal officials. The episode occurred Aug. 30, 1989.
