WOMAN HURT, 2ND CHARGED AS POLICE BREAK UP FIGHT

A Sycamore Street woman was stabbed several times today when she and another woman became involved in a wild fight on Gesl Street, one of the arresting officers said.

Cheryl Bates, 24, of 21 Gesl was in stable condition this morning at the Erie County Medical Center.

"The girl was stabbed in the stomach, back of the neck and back," said Officer D.J. Kessler of the Kensington Station.

Debra L. Coleman, 33, of 711 Sycamore was charged with first-degree assault.

Kessler and Officer Karen Czekalski were on patrol just past midnight when they spotted the women fighting outside Ms. Bates' home.

As the officers broke up the fight, they realized that Bates had been stabbed several times, Kessler said.

"I saw (Ms. Coleman) throw the knife, and then the other woman said she was stabbed," Kessler said.
