WIFE AWARDED $1.5 MILLION IN HUSBAND'S FATAL ACCIDENT

A State Supreme Court jury Tuesday ordered Sportservice Corp. to pay $1.5 million to the widow of a Cheektowaga truck driver who was crushed to death in an accident at Greater Buffalo International Airport 10 years ago.

Following a two-week trial before Justice Irving Fudeman, the jury granted the verdict to Patricia Baker for the death of her husband, Edward C. Baker, then 34, during an Aug. 25, 1980, accident at the loading dock of the Sportservice flight kitchen facility.

Robert B. Nichols, her attorney, said Baker was pinned between his truck and the wall of the facility's loading bay when his truck began rolling and moved slightly to the left just as he got out to deliver a shipment of dry ice.

Nichols said the slope of the loading bay had been altered by years of accumulated black topping and tarring and, instead of sloping inward toward the loading dock, was sloping outward at the time of the accident.
