FIREFIGHTERS USE HIGH-LIFT TO BATTLE FIRE IN TIRE PILE

Firefighters used a high-lift to spread out a large pile of tires burning in an auto salvage yard at 110 Hopkins St. about 9 p.m. Tuesday.

It was the third tire fire within 24 hours, officials noted. Monday night, firefighters fought a blaze in a pile of tires at a salvage yard at 654 Elk St.

Also, two trailers loaded with tires were set afire at Babcock and Hopkins streets about 10:25 p.m. Monday. Fire officials estimated $100,000 damage to the trailers.

The cause of the fires in both salvage-yard cases is under investigation.
