A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Mercy Convent, 625 Abbott Road, for Sister Mary Madonna, 53, a Sister of Mercy for 36 years who served as a principal at several Western New York Catholic schools.
Sister Madonna, the former Mary Ann Hoare, died Monday (June 25, 1990) in Our Lady of Mercy Generalate in Orchard Park after a long illness. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
Born in Buffalo, she attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help School and graduated from Bishop Quigley High School. Sister Madonna received her bachelor's degree in education from Mount St. Joseph Teachers College and a master's degree from Niagara University.
She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy on Aug. 30, 1954, and professed her vows on Aug. 23, 1957.
Sister Modonna spent her religious life in education, including elementary schools, high schools and at Trocaire College.
She was principal at St. Joseph's in Albion, St. James and SS. Peter and Paul in Jamestown and most recently at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Niagara Falls. She resigned from the post in Niagara Falls in 1988 due to illness.
Surviving are seven brothers, Richard Hoare of Orchard Park, Timothy Hoare of Springville, Dennis Hoare of Hamburg, Donald, Michael, Patrick and Bernard, and a sister, Kathleen Flood of Hamburg.
