LOCKPORT CHURCH LAUNCHES 'BUDDY' RECYCLING PROGRAM

The First Presbyterian Church, 21 Church St., has begun a "recycling buddy program" designed to help qualified senior citizens and handicapped persons in the city and Town of Lockport take part in area household waste-recycling projects.

Warren Smith, a spokesman for the Niagara Waste Consortium, said "effective immediately" those in need of the services may call 434-2059 to have newspapers, plastics, glass, cans and other recyclables picked up by "volunteer drivers from the buddy program."

The program is being coordinated by the Rev. William Hathaway, church pastor, and Colleen Lonigan, a parish member.

Smith said the service may be expanded to other communities in the future, describing the volunteer program "a tremendous gesture from a church that has been known through the years for its dedication to community service."
