Three consumer groups are accusing Chrysler Corp. of withholding evidence of rollover problems in 300,000 Jeep CJs, but the company and the government say the safety advocates have nothing new.

Brandishing a 3-inch-thick pile of internal Chrysler and American Motors documents, the auto safety advocates filed a petition Monday for a full-scale federal investigation into the CJ and Chrysler's actions.

The Institute for Injury Reduction, the Center for Auto Safety and Public Citizen turned over the documents, which they said prove that AMC and Chrysler knew of problems with the CJ-5 and CJ-7. The papers came from court cases against the CJ.
