A 35-year-old man was assaulted by four youths about 7 p.m. Monday when he tried to stop them from disrupting a youth soccer game in which his young son was playing on the Delaware Park soccer field, Colvin Station police reported.
The suspects not only were disrupting the game but also were swearing at the young players when Emmanuel Kulu tried to get them off the field, Officers Michael Fahey and Kenneth Devlin said.
The incident, in which Kulu was punched in the face and head by the four, was witnessed by about 100 other parents who came to watch the game and by the coaches, they said. But no one came to his aid.
Someone called police, and the four ran at the sight of approaching patrol cars.
Officers James Hacker, Samuel Gulisano, Fahey and Devlin said they chased the suspects through the park grounds for a quarter-mile before collaring them on the golf course.
Desmond McCloud, 21, of 52 Phyllis Ave.; Tyrone D. Jeter, 21, of 48 Ericson Ave.; Robert T. Bates, 20, of 58 Beverly Road, and Sean L. Murray, 17, of 444 Olympic Ave., were charged with assault, harassment and disorderly
Kulu was treated in Sisters Hospital for facial and head injuries and released.
