D'AMATO ASSAILS DRUG AID TO STATE AS A PALTRY SUM

It is wasteful to spend $860 million on each B-2 bomber while housing projects nationwide are being bombarded by drugs, Sen. Alfonse D'Amato said Monday at a hearing examining federal drug spending.

D'Amato said the $4 million provided by the federal government to New York because it was designated a high-intensity drug trafficking area is a paltry sum that was portrayed by the government as a "special bonanza."

He convened the hearings on the progress and impact of the New York high intensity drug trafficking program with an attack on the amount, which is supposed to be increased to $10 million next year, and a plea for more help.
