Let's get to the facts! If Richard Kern is "watching (the Housing Authority) very carefully," we in the Department of Occupancy and Marketing are wondering just what is he really watching?
Seventy-nine units have been leased at Lakeview Homes between Jan. 1 and June 1, not 11, as Mr. Kern claimed in the article "Activist raps housing authority, HUD, mayor on vacancies in Lakeview project."
Unfortunately, we encountered severe plastering problems at Lakeview, which we have since corrected. We are now readily filling these units with certified applicants. Of those leased, 52 percent of applicants identified themselves as homeless or living in substandard conditions.
The photograph shown above the article displays the quality efforts of our vacant apartment preparation division. This two-bedroom apartment at 12 Hudson was ready May 31, and the next day a certified application was sent to the development.
When we created our new department, it was our intention to turn over vacant apartments and house applicants in an efficient manner. We are accomplishing this mission.
