GENESEE COUNTY EMPLOYMENT REACHED RECORD LEVELS IN 1989

The Genesee County Industrial Development Agency reported that the county had 27,600 in its civilian work force in 1989.

Neil T. Burns, executive director, said the total is the largest in any recorded period and reversed a sharp decline early in the 1980s when a number of plant closings dropped the total working to 22,900.

Burns said the data shows that the county is not in the poor economic shape suggested in a recent federal report that cited the loss of 1,900 manufacturing jobs in the last decade.

The IDA attributes the job growth to a number of light commercial and service industries that have located in the county in recent years.
