A state record brown trout-- a whopping 30-pound, 5-ounce specimen -- was taken recently off Mexico Point near Oswego by Alan Matarazzo of Schenectady.
Matarazzo, fishing with 6-pound test line and a Rebel Fastrac lure, thought he had a king salmon during the 40-minute battle.
The record -- seven ounces better than the 1986 brown trout mark -- likely will earn him a fair amount of money, too:
He's entered in the Busch/Eslo Derby, so he gets $1,000. If his record holds through the second half of that event, he'll earn another $2,000 for breaking a state record while fishing the derby and he'll also win a $14,500 fishing boat package for the best brown trout taken in this year's contest.
