A man apparently thrown into the Erie Canal during a fistfight was found floating dead in the waterway Friday, and his assailant was charged with manslaughter, police said.
Monroe County Sheriff's deputies pulled the body of Shane Guest, 22, of Perinton from the canal about 6:15 a.m.
Guest had been fighting with Andrew Johnston, 26, of Fairport about 2 a.m. outside a bar in the village, five miles east of Rochester, police said.
Johnston apparently threw Guest into the canal, said sheriff's Capt. Douglas Swetman.
Johnston pleaded innocent to a second-degree manslaughter charge before County Judge Donald Wisner. Johnston was sent to the county jail on $5,000 bail.
