OLAF FUB SEZ: There's an old Japanese adage that "the nail whose head sticks up gets hit." . . .
ON THIS DAY -- In 546 B.C., Thales, the earliest Greek philosopher and the prototype of the absent-minded thinker, died. He once fell down a well while walking along in a philosophical trance and, possibly because of the experience, came up with the bold proposition that everything in the universe was made out of water . . . In 1611, English explorer Henry Hudson, discoverer of the Hudson River, the Hudson Straits and Hudson's Bay, was set adrift with his young son in a small boat in Hudson's Bay by mutineering seamen from his ship Discovery. He was never seen again. . . .
ELISA M. ENO of Clarence will be among the contestants at the Mrs. New York America Pageant Saturday and Sunday in Poughkeepsie. The state pageant will select New York's representative to the internationally televised Mrs. America Pageant to be staged in Russia.
Mrs. Eno and her husband, David, have two children, Jacqueline, 6, and Daniel, 3 months. The Fosdick Masten High School graduate works occasionally as a model and says she enjoys dancing, gardening and interior decorating. . . .
BUMPER STICKER -- Seen on the back of a beat-up pickup truck going south on Washington Street: "The one with the most toys when he dies wins." . . .
Yonder she stands so big and proud,
Reaching up as if to touch a cloud,
Bursting with colors of red, white and blue
For all that you stand for I am so proud of you.
Nations bow when you pass in review,
They all know the respect this country has for you.
Keep on waving over the land of the free,
Keep it always a safe place for you and me.
