I would like to express my shock at Niagara Falls Council Chairman Henry J. Buchalski's response to the allegations of political coercion by the administration of the Niagara Falls Police Department.
By stating that he "sees nothing wrong," Mr. Buchalski sends a message that Police Chief Fera and his top level administrators are free to break the laws that they are sworn to uphold.
I am sure that our legislators knew when they voted to adopt this type of legislation that police officers are the front line in protecting the rights of all citizens. To do this, they must remain free from political interference in any form. The allegations made in this matter point to possible violations of the most basic and important of American rights and ideals.
This problem, and the other recently exposed problems within the Niagara Falls Police Department, should be investigated by an outside agency.
